What a sight! 52 Impalas rolling into the SpeedZone one at a time. After we checked out each other's mods we went indoors and had a club meeting. The variety of people that make up this club is amazing. After I bought a hand held CB radio (with magnetic mount antenna) and the Mobil 1 (Corvette) oil cap, we ate and then went outside and raced various types of cars on various types of tracks.
The drag track was intense. They have V8 powered (propane) dragsters on tracks that are radio controlled except during the actual race. You reach speeds of 70 to 80 MPH in 190 feet and then the dragster is automatically braked back to zero MPH in about 100 feet. The G forces during stopping are more severe than anything I've ever experienced! The braking is accomplished by some mechanism under the track, not the wheels. No car could ever stop that hard! The 5 point harness keeps you from launching out of the dragster during deceleration.
As the attendant unbuckled my harness after the 2nd ride, he saw my Impala SS shirt and said, "I know it doesn't compare to your Impala but how was it?" Tongue firmly planted in cheek, I said, "I guess it's okay". 8-)
This outing will be a tough act to follow--but I'm looking forward to the next one anyway! Great job guys/gals.
Take care,
