| During 1999, SoCalSS was pleased to welcome Kazuhiro (Kazu) Tanaka from Japan as a member. Kazu obviously loved Impalas because he seemed to know the modifications on every car in the club! While in Southern California, Kazu wrote to Daytona Japan, a famous Japanese automotive publication, about his good experiences with SoCalSS and especially with fellow SoCalSS member, Joe Watring. Below is the cover of the magazine in which SoCalSS and Joe are featured and, below that, the letter Kazu wrote to the magazine. Can you spot the two mentions of "SoCalSS"? |

What follows is a very loose translation of the letter below.
"I buy your magazine every month as soon as it hits the stands on the 6th. My brother and I love to talk about American cars far into the night. It is my favorite time of every month. By the way, my car is '96 Impala SS and my brother's car is a '94 Caprice Wagon." "I'm now in California to learn English and have joined the Southern California Impala SS Owners (SoCalSS) car club." "Just before I left for California, I made friends with SoCalSS member Joe Watring through the Internet, when I asked him where I could get Impala OEM chrome wheels. When I arrived at LAX, Joe was there with his SS to pick me up and take me to Irvine, where I stayed for the first few months. When I got kind of homesick, he always came over to take me to a lot of places, like the Street Legal drag race in Pomona or to dinner." "Recently we attended a SoCalSS cruise to Santa Barbara. There were about 80 Impalas, making a long line about 4 km long on a freeway. Everyone on the freeway was surprised at what was going on." "If not for Joe and this club, I think I would have gone back to Japan in a few months because of homesickness. It was a good choice to have bought an Impala SS. I've changed schools and now live at Joe's house where I'm enjoying American life." "By the way, Joe's SS is the fastest naturally aspirated Impala, running 400m in 13.1 seconds. I'm buying a lot of parts in America so I can make my car the fastest SS in Japan, like Joe's in the US. I'm Joes pupil!!" "I think SoCalSS members will be surprised if you (publisher) put this picture in the magagine. Please do it. Thanks, Kazu (21)" |
