COUPÉ CHEVY 1969 TO 1978

1968. General Motors, in the United States, presents the Chevy II “Nova”, a design by John DeLorean one of the most recognized and responsible designers of several muscle cars.
As anecdotal information: DeLorean, already independent of the GM, was the one who designed the car of the famous behind. “Back to the Future”.

1968. Chevrolet introduces the “250” engine, both in the vans and in the 400.
The rivalry and fierce fight for the market gave the 400 and Falcon, had been fighting for 6 years, meanwhile, the public, and expects something different.

For those years: Chrysler replaces the Valiant for the Dodge, Ford had in preparation the Fairlane (why they would not have manufactured the coupe, no?) And the IKA, with the Torino was on the threshold of a total success with the feat of Nurburgring.
Faced with this, in the end: the most important automotive company in the world: Chevrolet, could not lose ground and begins to develop what we would know as the Chevy

Initially they had 2 objectives: to share the most pieces with the 400 and thus to reduce production costs and to find a name according to the launch since, in Spanish, the association of “Nova” with “No Va” was inevitable. It is not a matter of giving served on silver tray the possibility of receiving “jokes” from the users.
Incredible how the names of brands affect, right?

Finally the nickname that the Chevrolets in the USA received: Chevy.

Not all were roses on the way to the presentation of the car. Chevrolet needed to make certain and certain modifications on the imported model to meet the requirements of Argentine geography.

The advertising campaign was to be characterized by the phrase “Chevy, The Great Temptation” which showed a bite apple accompanied by a beautiful woman.

The Chevy STD and SS

1969. In August they present the 4-door version. In its later part it incorporated a novel design of continuous curvature of fast-back type (the trunk continued directly from the fall of the telescope without forming no angle).
It was the model STD (Standard) that came with the engine of 6 cylinders called “230” (3769 Cc) with 2 options of power, 137 Hp and 144 Hp and 3 changes to the steering wheel
Its appearance came hand in hand with a chevrolet safety system that consisted of a deformable steering column, in case of collision.

At the end of 1969, they presented a sport version: the most equipped coupé, called “SS”, acronyms of Super Sport and were the same used in the USA the Camaro, with a motorization of “250 7B” (4,097cc) With 155 HP a box ZF of 4 speeds with lever to the floor and armchairs. The car had on the outside of its roof a vinyl cover, sports tires and other elements that gave a distinctive touch.

Chevy Series 2

1972 The Styling Department proposed to GM executives to make a more sporty Chevy, a project that was initially called Matador. This was a coupé that had received modifications intended to accentuate its sport spirit.

When the project went on the Marketing side, the name was the first objection since it gave the feeling that it was going to “kill people on the street”. This one was changed by the one of Cimarrón and even a prototype was realized that fell well in the majority of those who had seen it.

But in the plans of the General Management of GMA there was no interest in the Chevy range to present a new sports version.

In that year the optional automatic box was incorporated on the Deluxe version, which was derived in the Deluxe Chevromatic.
That same year a change of authorities in the company is made so that the Department of Design – composed by Jorge Ferreyra Basso and Pedro Garci’a – again insisted with the idea of the sporty Chevy.

The intention was limited because there was little money available to develop new elements. Likewise, the design team imagined that by removing luxury elements like vinyl roofing, baguettes, cups and changing the traditional color chart, the Chevy would be closer to the ideal sports car.

On a “peeled” car, Pedro Garcia began to shape a sports strip underneath the glass that continued behind the rear window and was raised by the parante. The project was approved and renamed Series 2.

The strip of the Chevy Series 2 was very successful and marked a time in the national automotive industry. It was imitated by Ford, who placed it in the Falcon Sprint, by Chrysler, who then launched the Dodge RT, and by SAFRAR-Peugeot, with 504 TN.

The aesthetic bagage was added a variant in the motorization since after the 250 accompanied more seductively the Series 2 was fitted a double mouth carburetor, manifold intake and exhaust with modifications: was born the 250 Plus , With 170 HP that incorporated a carburetor of double mouth.

Although the image of the Chevy Series 2 was more powerful and sporty than the one of the conventional Coupé SS, the cost was smaller due to the removal of several ornaments, reason why the increase in the sales triggered a rise in the profits of the company.
The Series 2 managed to double in sales to the previous model, fact that deserved a recognition of GM USA.

The front turn lights go on the grill instead of the bumpers, while the rear shows a new style created by Garcia.

The country was complicated for different reasons in that year ’75. Range sales fell sharply during that period, a fact that complicated quite a lot the future of General Motors. After a ’76 of slight recovery, the Chevy remained unchanged until the end of that same year when the 1977 range was launched.

This showed a profile not so sporty, now closer to a luxury car, supported by a thin line that came to occupy the bottom of the sides. Also the air intakes of the bonnet are removed, the tires are painted of the tone of the body and a new upholstery is designed.
